Why a German Bakery?
The Porch Bäckerei began as a love letter.
When I started dating my husband, Walter, he told me about the delicious treats his grandparents brought from Germany.
He mentioned Lebkuchen, Christmas Stollen, Aachener Printen, and, of course, Brötchen.
He spoke about these with such enthusiasm, followed by the disappointment that finding anything remotely close to them in the United States is surprisingly difficult.
The funny thing is that I didn't think I was any good at baking. Still, I was determined to recreate these flavors from Walter's childhood.
At first, I had no idea what I was doing, but small success lit him up, and that was enough to keep me going. Over time, I developed my skills, and baking became a place where I could experiment, learn, and enjoy the process without worrying (too much) about everything turning out perfectly.
Along the way, I found myself growing curious about my own German heritage - a part of my family history I had never felt particularly connected to before.
Today, The Porch Bäckerei is the result of a love for German baking, a family story, and the surprising discovery that I enjoy baking far more than I ever imagined. What began as a gift for my husband has become something we now enjoy creating together.
Our hope is simple: to bring the experience of a neighborhood German bakery to our corner of Nashville. Once a month, we bake fresh Brötchen, seasonal cakes, and a few favorite German treats to share with our community.
